Birlinn Limited is an independent publishing house which was set up in 1992 by Managing Director Hugh Andrew.
Although the company has grown to take on a number of imprints, Birlinn publishes mostly non-fiction books based around biography, history and Scottish interest. Its five imprints are Birlinn, Polygon, Arena Sport, Birlinn E Books, and John Donald.
Polygon has published works by Alexander McCall Smith, and readers interested in how Sir Walter Scott helped shape Scotland’s cultural landscape can find out more with Polygon’s print of Scott-Land by Stuart Kelly.
Birlinn is an old Norse word which means a long boat or small galley with 12 to 18 oars, which was used in the Hebrides and West Highlands of Scotland in the Middle Ages. They are the publishers of a popular Lost series including Lost Edinburgh and Lost Glasgow which examine the lost side of the history of the city. They also publish authors Harry Papadopoulos, James Adair and Sara Sheridan.
