Kidnapped Evaluation Report
In February 2007 people from all across Edinburgh came together to read Robert Louis Stevenson’s classic book, Kidnapped. This was Edinburgh’s firstcitywide reading campaign with 25,000 free books being given away – includinga fantastic new graphic novel version – and a month of school, community and public events all designed to get people reading.
We have created a report which pulls together information about the campaign, and includs the findings of an independent research organisation who monitored the campaign, The Audience Business.

Knowing Kidnapped from when I was younger (now 63), I decided to read the illustrated version this time. I thought the illustrations were outstanding, so much so that I read it in one sitting, and have re-read it several times since. Alan Grant's adaptation, combined with Cam Kennedy's illustrations, brought it to life all over again for me, and I eagerly look forward to reading the next in your series, assuming there will be a next? I had never read it and had never had any inclination to read it but love freebies so accepted the free copy. I then read it, and loved it. I enjoyed the story, the Scots language, the geographical references, the characters. I enjoyed the introduction and the information at the back. It made me laugh out loud in places, and I finished it quickly. (Web respondent)
Kidnapped is a truly gripping story which I found exciting as a tale and was excited to be reading at last. I am a huge fan of RLS as a person. RLS is a true Scottish hero, an icon. I have read some of his poetry for children, which is beautiful but to finally read a novel was great so THANK YOU for this scheme which inspired me finally to pick up, and devour, this wonderful book. I am now passing it round to others. My 10 year old nephew also read the graphic novel and LOVED it too! Thanks. (Web respondent)
