One Book One Edinburgh 2008 - Jekyll and Hyde

We've programmed ten days of events to get us all inspired by Stevenson and the Edinburgh he loved.

The public book launch is on Thursday 21st February and the main program runs until Sunday 2nd March. You can find all our Reading Campaign events in our What's On section. With exception of the walking tours, booking is essential.

We have put up a photo gallery and a press gallery so you can see what we have been up to so far.

Exhibitions and Displays:

Capital Collections online exhibition

See beautiful old photographs of Edinburgh in Robert Louis Stevenson's day, in this specially cereated online whirl through choice aspects of the city's photographic archives, newly digitised.

Stevenson Exhibition at the Writers' Museum

Situated in Lady Stair's House, built in 1622, The Writers' Museum houses the most significant Stevenson collection in the United Kingdom, from portraits and manuscripts to personal exhibits. Come and see the very cabinet made by Deacon Brodie that sat in Stevenson's childhood home and is thought to have been one of the inspirations behind the Strange Case of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde.

Comics Grow Up!   April-May 2008 at the National Library of Scotland

The forthcoming exhibition will present the historical development of comics and graphic novels from their earliest beginnings to contemporary diversity. It will also reveal the vitality of the current Scottish writers and artists at work in the medium. Includes exclusive artwork by Cam Kennedy.

6pm Gothic Fiction/Gothic Cities Discussion

This event brings together three academics to discuss the Gothic and how it relates to Jekyll and Hyde. Prof Glennis Byron (Stirling University) will speak on the gothic; Prof Ian Campbell (University of Edinburgh) on Jekyll & Hyde, Hogg and gothic Edinburgh; Prof Laurence Davies (Glasgow University) on gothic London and Edinburgh. Dr Linda Dryden (University of Napier) will chair the speakers' event and Richard Dury (scholar and editor of the RLS website) is coming over from Bergamo for the debate after the talks.

The audience will be invited to join in the debate and explore the Gothic themes of Stevenson's novel. The event is open to all, but Sixth form students are particularly welcome to St Augustine's Church

Storytelling with style, devised by Donald Smith and produced at the Scottish Storytelling Centre, this 45-minute dramatisation will be followed by an exclusive post-show discussion with the adaptor, the performers and One Book - One Edinburgh team. Stevenson's story raises significant contemporary issues. How should we interpret it today? And is Edinburgh a Jekyll and Hyde city?
