There are few authors better than Robert Louis Stevenson in tempting the reader to turn to the first page of a book and remain hooked until “The End”. By providing this wonderful opportunity for people of all abilities to connect through this thrilling novel, this campaign highlights the enjoyment to be found in all kinds of Scottish literature. Every Scot – no matter their background - should have the curiosity, desire and ability to pick up a book and read to their heart’s content.

Stevenson is probably Scotland's greatest writer and Dr Jekyll & Mr Hyde is his best work, a telling and timeless parable on the human condition.
Irvine Welsh, author

Jekyll and Hyde is a really great read, a remarkable and subtle call for the avoidance of absolutes, a literary precognition of the coming horrors of twentieth century fascist absolutism, and a humane parable that will never age or lose relevance.

One of the truly remarkable things about reading is that we feel a strong desire to share with others those books that we appreciate. The idea of one city reading one book is an immensely attractive one, particularly when that book is by one of the city’s favourite writers. Stevenson wrote about Edinburgh even when he appeared to be writing about somewhere else. So Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde is a good choice. And if it scares you, you’ll have the satisfaction of knowing that lots of other people will be scared at the same time.
Alexander McCall-Smith, author and patron of Scottish Book Trust

Jekyll and Hyde is a book that constantly throws shadows of doubts across the path of the reader. Those who've never read it think they know what it is about: those of us who've read it often are still wondering.
James Robertson, author

Jekyll and Hyde is a common shorthand. We think we know what it means. Reading the book, however, like reading Frankenstein, acquaints you first hand with a white-hot idea, one that reached beyond the page and became part of contemporary consciousness. Reading it will give you the best reward any book can: I guarantee it will shake up what you think you already know.

If Stevenson were alive today, he'd be writing Batman stories.

It’s the book everybody thinks they know, but may never have actually read, the iconic Scottish story.

Mr Hyde's life is nasty, brutish and short - but never dull.

Jekyll & Hyde has become so much part of our culture that even those who have never read it know the basis of the story, possibly because it touches a nerve, exposing the potential for evil in human nature which we would rather pretend doesn't exist. Atmospheric and dark, it's a compact but powerful tale.

Jekyll & Hyde is terrifying and compelling, combining detective, thriller and horror in one small volume - surely the inspiration for many of today's 'Tartan Noir' writers.

Jekyll and Hyde is wonderfully chilling and a compulsive read. A fantastic novel that keeps you gripped from beginning to end.

Deep in the dark recess of mind Jekyll and Hyde coil like snakes in us all - but which one do we feed?

What makes the story so eerie and frightening is that it's not happening to tough guys off TV, or sharp operators from MI5. But to sound, respectable middle-aged professional gentlemen, who see their old friend disintegrating before their eyes?
