I saw a triangle slicing the water fifteen feet away. It was a shark's fin. An awful tingle, cold and liquid, went up and down my spine.

Community Programme 2008

One Book One Edinburgh 2008 - Jekyll and Hyde

One Book - One Edinburgh aims to reach out to all Edinburgh citzens.  We have provided the text in multiple, accessible formats, ensured that it is stocked in public libraries and have made Jekyll & Hyde freely available online.

We are working with key partner organisations to provide workshops, web resources, free books and special events tailored to group needs, and are particularly encouraging reluctant readers to get involved.

Adult Learning Projects

We are working with CLAN Edinburgh to engage with adult learners across the city, and are producing  materials for CLAN specifically aimed at those groups.  CLAN tutors are working over the coming months on a range of projects inspired by the themes of Jekyll & Hyde, and we have arranged special events to inspire learners.

Online Resources

A selection of our web-based resources include:

RL Stevenson Quote

Youth Literacy Work

We worked closely with the Youth Literacy team with Kidnapped in 2007, and this year they are working on multimedia projects related to Jekyll & Hyde.  We are also please to have the involvement of Edinburgh's Reading Champion, working with looked-after children.

  • Animation project with South Bridge Resource Centre
  • Fruitmarket Gallery display
  • Reading Champion book group
  • City walking tours for youth groups

Accessible Options - Audio

LibriVox – loads of free audiobooks for public domain material. They have a human-voiced version of Jekyll & Hyde, and the quality is fine and decent quality.

Free Books - computer readings of RLS's Edinburgh Picturesque Notes as a free MP3 to download, a wonderful look at Edinburgh through Stevenson's eyes.

Classic Audio Books - free, human narrated audio, includes Treasure Island and other fiction from that period.

Project Gutenberg – human-read, lots of books, but their only Stevenson free audio, human-read, is his story The Cow.

There are various audio book versions of Jekyll and Hyde - ask at your local bookshop.
