Ever dreamed of spending a night in a bookshop? To browse the shelves by candlelight after the doors have closed? For one night only you can do just that AND raise funds for a terrific cause.
In September Streetreads – the amazing organisation bringing books to homeless readers – moved into the Lighthouse Book’s basement and turned an old office into a magical book cave. Every day books are packed up and dispatched to individuals, soup kitchens, food banks and the like for Edinburgh’s homeless readers.
Streetreads’ work, and Social Bite’s mammoth Sleepout got them thinking about the amazing network of individuals and organisations supporting vulnerable people in Edinburgh’s community. Then Marie Moser of the Edinburgh Bookshop had the idea of a bookseller sleep out to raise awareness and the idea evolved from there. So to raise some pennies for their work Lighthouse Books are having a sleep over – in the bookshop!
There will be stories and readings by candlelight, and hot chocolate, and let’s face it, what reader hasn’t dreamt of sleeping in a bookshop?!
They’re aiming to raise £2000, so each camper is committing to raise at least £50 – including a £10 donation to sign up below! Every penny will go to homelessness projects in the bookshop’s local area: half to Streetreads, half to Souper Saturday.
There is limited floor space so do RSVP asap by making a £10 donation!
If you’d like to contribute but can’t make it to event you can donate using the link HERE- and if you are sponsoring a sleeper do put their name in the comments box when you donate!
Doors open at 9.30pm, bedtime story at 10, lights off at 11. They’ll leave lights on in the Fiction room for any late nighters who want to stay up chatting or reading!
Finally they’ll wrap up with coffee & buns at 9.30am.
You’ll need your own sleeping bag/duvet/pillows/whatever you need to sleep – feel free to come in PJs! They do have a loo and a sink, although they are downstairs.
