Huge congratulations to poet J.O. Morgan for scooping the 2018 Costa Poetry Award for his beautiful collection Assurances. Although now based on a small farm in the Scottish Borders, he originally comes from Edinburgh and was inspired by his father’s experience as an RAF officer for this, his fifth book. Morgan has won widespread critical acclaim for his work, with the Costa judges noting that they were “gripped by this polyphonic book-length poem” while critic Stuart Kelly wrote in the Scotsman: “I seriously doubt I will read a more significant book of poetry this year.”
Assurances is now in the running for the Costa Book of the Year, up against other category winners including Sally Rooney’s Normal People and The Skylarks’ War by Hilary McKay which was announced as the Children’s Book Award Winner.
