Edinburgh has been blessed with four amazing Makars since the honorary role was created by the City of Edinburgh Council in 2002 in support of the application to become the world’s first UNESCO City of Literature. Now a new website will help spread the word of the talent and hard work of the Makar even further.
Officially hosted by the Council, the site – www.edinburghmakar.org – is the place to go for recent news on the Makar – currently Christine De Luca – as well as giving some background to the role, previous Makars and the place of the Makar within the wider context of the literary city. You can also hear poems and see short films related to the work of the Makar, including Christine’s recent reading of Edinburgh Gifts and Through the Traffic of Tongues to mark the 10th anniversary of Edinburgh designation as a City of Literature.
