The Reading Mission in Edinburgh City Libraries – Mission Success!
This summer over 5000 children joined Edinburgh City Libraries’ annual reading challenge and made it their mission to read 6 library books over the holidays in exchange for exciting spy-themed goodies. The challenge encourages children to enjoy books and maintain their reading skills and motivation during the school holidays. Almost 3000 children completed the Reading Mission – an increase of 28% from last year – to proudly receive a medal, certificate and secret message pen.
Book issues for children and teenagers also rose by 10% over the summer period. Libraries welcomed 2000 children to events around the city including medal ceremonies, craft activities, finger printing and a Thomas the Tank Engine Day and in the words of one child: “it was great fun. I read so many cool books! It was so secret … I had fun!”
