11 talented recipients of this year’s Scottish Book Trust New Writers Awards – including four from Edinburgh – have been announced, each receiving a £2,000 cash award and a tailored package including mentoring from writers and industry professionals, training in public relations, social media and performance and the opportunity to show their work to publishers and agents.
The Awards have been made over three groups:
Fiction & Narrative Non Fiction – Samantha Clark, Nadine Aisha Jassat, Beth Cochrane, Mary Fitzpatrick, and Eilidh McCabe.
Poetry – Rhona Warwick, Aileen Ballantyne, Duncan Stewart Muir,
Children’s and Young Adult Fiction – A.E. Daly, Fiona McKeracher.
Callan Gordon Award – Sasha Thanisch
The four authors from Edinburgh in the group include Beth Cochrane, a previous Story Shopper from 2016 and programme and events coordinator at Scottish Poetry Library; Aileen Ballantyne, a tutor at Edinburgh University; Nadine Aisha Jassat a gender-based violence professional; and Anne Hughes, a software developer
The awards are open to writers over the age of 18 living and working in Scotland. They must not have published a novel, narrative non-fiction book (e.g. biography or memoir) or a collection of short stories or poems. Writers must be able to demonstrate a strong commitment to developing a career in writing.
