This month, Edinburgh City of Literature is delighted to offer free, guided walking tours of our illuminated Stars & Stories lightbox trail in the Canongate area of the Royal Mile.
The tour lets you explore 24 beautiful light boxes displaying quotations which shine a light on the print and publishing history of the Canongate area. You can find out more about the stories behind each of the boxes, learn stories about the buildings and the incredible literary heritage of Edinburgh’s Royal Mile, on our website here.
The walking tours will last around an hour and, as they’re in Scotland in December, please wrap up warm! All locations are outside and wheelchair accessible, although covering some of the uneven terrain of the Old Town.
Booking is highly recommended, which you can do here. The tours will run on 7 Dec, 14 Dec, 21 Dec, and 28 Dec.
Are there ID or minimum age requirements to enter the event?
The tour is welcoming to all ages and species (dogs are welcome!); although the tour isn’t specifically written for children, we’re very happy to have younger visitors along.
I can’t come to the walking tour, where else can I find out about the boxes?
Maps are available in a number of the venues hosting the boxes, and at the iCentre on Waverley Mall. There’s more information on the City of Literature website: cityofliterature.com/starsandstories and a series of videos which give detail about location on YouTube here.
Can I just show up without a ticket?
We’d recommend booking in advance (which is free) so we know you’re coming. Places are limited on each tour, so it’s helpful to have an idea of numbers – if too many show up, we will give priority to those who have booked a place. However, we understand that sometimes decisions are made last minute so don’t feel like you can’t try and pop along!
