Literary Tourism Innovation Fund

Edinburgh UNESCO City of Literature Trust, Scottish Enterprise and the Edinburgh Tourism Action Group (ETAG) launched the City of Literature Trust – Literary Tourism Innovation Fund in August 2014 to help develop new literary products and literary experiences for Edinburgh.

It was a direct response to what local tourism businesses said about the level of support necessary to develop new literary tourism experiences.

The Literary Tourism Innovation Fund has been created to help reduce the initial risk of setting up new quality literary tourism experiences and product development projects for businesses. The focus is on projects that celebrate Edinburgh’s literary scene – past and present – and raise the profile of its literary legacy.

At the launch, an initial £10,000 with a maximum award per application of £5,000 was made available which was shared between three successful applicants in November 2014. Two months later at the ETAG Tourism Conference a second round of £10,000 was released with an application deadline set for 31st March 2015.

Funding is available to both public and private sector operators. It is also available to any organisation (including charities) already involved in literature, providing that the project they wish to fund is tourism related. Projects must be new and Edinburgh based. They must have tourist appeal. They should be innovative and financially sustainable.

Applications can be for as little as £100 or as high as £5000, as long as applicants meet the stipulated criteria and are able to contribute at least 20% of the project’s costs in cash.

The fund aims to support the “Edinburgh 2020 tourism strategy”. As such, it will focus on projects which strengthen Edinburgh’s appeal as a literary destination and thus broaden the city’s literary tourism.

In addition to financial support applicants will be able to consult with City of Literature Trust experts who can help inform and shape ideas, and, depending on the nature and scale of the project, applications may potentially be able to tap into specialist innovation support from Scottish Enterprise.

This support includes:

  • Developing your ideas
  • Refining your ideas
  • Collaboration and working with others to enhance the offering

The Literary Tourism Innovation fund is supported by Edinburgh UNESCO City of Literature Trust, Scottish Enterprise and the Edinburgh Tourism Action Group (ETAG).

The deadline for the second round of funding is 5pm on 31st March 2015.
