I was seized with a keen desire to see Holmes again... He was pacing the room swiftly, eagerly, his hands clasped behind him.

Information

A former Professor of Medicine and past chairman of The Friends of Scottish Opera, Dr Ian Robertson gives a humorous and illustrated talk on operatic medicos to celebrate the release of his book Doctors in Opera published by Scottish Opera.

This rigorously researched and mischievous overview takes an affectionate sideswipe at everyone, from the verbose quack Dr Dulcamara in Donizetti’s L’elisir d’amore to the brief, tuneless (and terminal) appearance of the Professor of Medicine in Berg’s Lulu.

With his medical background, Roberston is well placed to analyse the surprising numerous operatic appearances of GPs, psychiatrists, surgeons, ophthalmologists, cardiologists, imposters -even a canine doctor- in works from Dittersdorf to Turnage, via Mozart, Verdi, Prokofiev, Britten, Maxwell Davies and many more.

Signed copies of Doctors in Opera will be available for purchase following the talk.
