Beer, biscuits and books


The phrase ‘beer, biscuits and books’ attached itself to Edinburgh thanks to the influence of the brewing, biscuit-making, and printing industries on the city.




These trades are represented in the collections at the Peoples’ Story museum, which offer visitors a look into the working lives of ordinary citizens

In particular, bookbindery was one of the areas in which women typically participated in the book production trade, where they collated, folded and hand sewed books prior to binding.
