This quotation comes from Jackie Kay’s poem ‘Threshold’ which she read at the opening of Parliament in July 2016. It was written as a celebration of the diversity of Scotland as part of her role as the third Scots Makar, a position established by the Scottish government in 2004 to recognise the significant contribution of poetry to the culture of Scotland.

Previous Makars were Liz Lochhead and Edwin Morgan, the first Makar who held the post until his death in 2010.
